It's finally happening. My latest novel, One Hundred Moments Of Us, is being published in one week! My last novel, The Worst Man, was published way back in March of 2023 so it feels like this is overdue. So, given it's been such a long time, I thought I'd write a blog post about the journey to publication. But first, you probably want to see the lovely cover. Okay, fine, here you go.
Way back in the heady days of early 2023, I had an idea for a novel. It was called The Library Of Us. It was essentially a book about a couple that were on the verge of breaking up, and they were going through their house, looking at all their possessions and each held a memory. This idea morphed into how we can break down a whole relationship into single memories, and then memories became moments, and, well, I'm sure you can figure out the rest.
Once I had written the book, I sent it off to a few beta readers, and the response was great, but at that time the ending was quite different and needed work. After a few rewrites, I sent it off to a few publishers. Hera Books were the first to come back and they loved it! Obviously, I was ecstatic, but that was when the real work began.
The biggest problem with writing a novel with one hundred moments is picking the moments. Imagine trying to break down your own relationship into one hundred moments over twenty years. One of the things Hera and I spent most of the time on was picking the right moments then weaving them into a story. It was like having a giant jigsaw puzzle, and we kept moving things around until eventually, everything fit together perfectly.
The edits for this book were substantial, but I know that everything we did, and all the choices we made, have made it so much better. The beauty of this book for me is that it has all the big moments, all the drama, the plot twists, and the emotions you'd expect in a love story, but it also has all the little moments too. I loved writing this book with these two characters and taking them on the journey of a lifetime, through the incredible highs, the depressing lows, and all the moments in between. This is the love story I always wanted to write. It's big and small at the same time. It's equal parts comedy and drama. It's an everyday love story.
